In 53 years, only one family has called this Bainbridge Island, WA, abode their own.

Fortunately, it was never altered and retains its original midcentury modern personality.

Spanning 3,196 square feet and set on a 1.25-acre lot, the place was completed in 1970. The four-bedroom, one-bath home is flawlessly sited to take advantage of the area’s magnificent mountain, water, and city views.

“It really is a sweet package,” confirms listing agent Cheryl Mauer, of Windermere Real Estate Bainbridge Island, who listed the property for $2,398,000 on May 25. “We had multiple offers, and so it’s [now] pending.”

Original architectural details in this time capsule include curved walls; 12-foot, hemlock-wood ceilings; and a glass pavilion. Unmatched Puget Sound vistas, a two-car garage, and spacious laundry room are some of the home’s notable features.

At showings, “people were walking around like it was a museum exhibit,” Mauer says, adding that young families and retirees alike were among the potential buyers. “It [has] a great floor plan, even for today—for entertaining, with the open flow, and the fireplace.”

A buyer might want to refinish the floors, which are original to the home.

The seller, who is an interior designer, collaborated with architect Robert G. Becker, whose projects included the “House of the Future” at Lake Sammamish. The groundbreaking home graced the January 1979 cover of House Beautiful magazine.

As avid gardeners, the sellers installed a raised-bed vegetable garden that’s fenced in to protect from deer.

“It’s a beautiful, rural island—and yet, it’s only a 35-minute ferry ride to Seattle,” Mauer notes. “You feel like you’re on vacation, living here.”

And bonus: The next owner will get to wake up in a beautifully maintained home that is straight out of the 1970s.

“It’s been in the same family for 50 years, and they took great care of it,” Mauer says. “Now it’s ready for the next owner.”
