Rachel's grandfather, the renowned Dallas news anchor John Criswell, and her grandmother, Elizabeth Criswell, a Child of Deaf Adults (CODA), greatly influenced her. Her grandmother founded the Deaf Action Center in Dallas in the '80s, serving the underrepresented deaf community in the DFW metroplex. Elizabeth's efforts were instrumental in changing state and national legislation to require that deaf individuals be provided with a translator in doctor's offices, courtrooms, and schools.
