The South Carolina hunting lodge where disgraced attorney Alex Murdaugh was found guilty of murdering his wife and son is back on the market—just seven months after it was purchased.
The Moselle Estate House, in Islandton, SC, was listed for $1.95 million. It includes the 5,275-square-foot home where the Murdaugh family’s housekeeper, Gloria Satterfield, mysteriously died in 2018 and just 21 of the original property’s 1,772 acres. The current owners will keep the rest of the property.
Murdaugh, a once-powerful attorney, is serving a life sentence for shooting Maggie Murdaugh, 52, and Paul Murdaugh, 22, to death on June 7, 2021. Last month, he pleaded guilty to 22 counts of financial fraud and money laundering for swindling clients and the estate of his late housekeeper to pay for his drug addiction.
He was also accused of hiring a hit man to kill him so his surviving son, Richard “Buster” Murdaugh, could collect a $10 million life insurance policy.
Netflix released a documentary series on the tragedies, “Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal,” in February. The second season dropped last month.
The home at the center of the tragedies—measuring nearly 5,300 square feet with four bedrooms and 4.5 baths—recently went back up for sale. It was built in 2011 and boasts front and back porches, a two-story foyer, a chef’s kitchen, a kitchen island with granite countertops, and a walk-in pantry. The primary suite features a bathroom with a jetted tub.
Other details include “custom gun cabinets” in the recreational room, according to the listing.
The home is about 45 miles from Beaufort, SC, 70 miles from Charleston, SC, and 75 miles from Savannah, GA.
In March, the entire property (including the house) was sold for $2,663,676, according to Realtor.com® data. It was sold at a steep discount, which is common for properties where someone was murdered. The property had originally been listed for $3.9 million.
The property had been under contract since June of the prior year but was tied up in court until the sale went through in March. The proceeds of the sale went to pay off the mortgage, to Murdaugh’s surviving son, as well as to the victims.
Those victims included the family of Mallory Beach, who was killed in a 2019 boating accident. Murdaugh’s slain son, Paul, had been driving the boat under the influence of alcohol. Last year, Beach’s family filed a lawsuit against the Murdaugh estate.
Potential buyers seeking a showing of the property must have an appointment and be able to provide a mortgage pre-approval.
