An exclusive equestrian estate in Newport Beach, CA, just landed on the market for $32 million. The property features an artificial lake and a sprawling midcentury mansion.
Finding “a home on 2.7 acres in Newport Beach, with a fully stocked lake, a 10-car garage, and the feel of a serene compound is a once-in-a-lifetime thing,” says listing agent John Stanaland, of Douglas Elliman Real Estate.
He explains that the estate was created by the type of person you might encounter just once in a lifetime.
Harry Rinker, who died at the age of 100 in 2021, had an incredible 80-year career in real estate. He began as a broker and became one of the country’s most iconic developers—a force behind thousands of homes in Orange County, dozens of shopping centers, and hundreds of gas stations.
Rinker also delved into the world high-end residential communities in Sun Valley, ID, helping put the now-legendary luxury town on the map. Rinker and his wife, Diane, also contributed millions to educational, artistic, environmental, and medical organizations.

But one of Rinker’s greatest projects was the creation of this estate for his family. The land itself was purchased for about $100,000 in the early 1960s. He then commissioned architect Philmer J. Ellerbroek to design the home, which he intended to use for large-scale entertaining and intimate family living.
“The architect was far ahead of his time; and the home, which was finished in 1966, is stunning,” Stanaland says. “And it has been beautifully maintained over the years, so it is in mint condition.”
The 5,872-square-foot home is perched at the end of a winding, gravel driveway, behind a gated entrance and flanked by mature trees.
“It is truly separated and completely private,” Stanaland says. “A real retreat.”
The house has 5 bedrooms, 5.5 baths, and a main living area that includes a formal sitting room; game room with a half-vault, exposed-beam ceiling; plus a multipurpose open space that leads outside. There’s also a pool table and a bar.
The primary suite is a private retreat situated in its own wing. It offers views of the pool on one side and Back Bay vistas on the other. Additional bedrooms are in other areas of the house, affording privacy for the entire family.
And the home’s grounds are just as spectacular. The family kept and rode horses on the estate for decades. And while the stables were later converted to accommodate a collection of luxury cars, it could easily be converted back, Stanaland says.
The property is also outfitted with a spa; manicured pathways; and a lake stocked with bass, crawdads, and bluegills.
“The family fished in the lake, and it’s large enough to accommodate a rowboat,” Stanaland explains. “There are also pheasants that live on the property, and a whole host of migratory birds, including bald eagles, osprey, and snowy egrets.”
Parties at the home over the years were legendary, with live music performances from orchestras and bold-faced party-goers such as John Wayne.
This home would be perfect for a fun-loving family who crave their own private piece of paradise, but also want to occasionally open it up share it with others.
Diane Rinker has remained at the home since her husband’s death but is ready to downsize. She wants to pass along the home’s legacy of happiness and hope to its new owner, Stanaland notes.
