Did the Story of This Sweet, $575K Tucson Home Begin in the Sears, Roebuck Catalog?

What might have once been a home ordered from a catalog in the early 1900s is now a comfy retreat in a great Tucson, AZ, neighborhood.

The list price for the two-bedroom, two-bathroom home is $575,000.

“According to the Historical Society of Tucson, it arrived by train in pieces from Sears and Roebuck in 1906,” says listing agent Cara Mancuso, with Golden Girls with SW Desert Homes. Though, there is no written proof.

“In order for it to be a historic home in Tucson, at least two exterior walls have to remain the same, and I believe the front and the south walls are original,” says Mancuso.

In 2000, a primary suite was added to the home, increasing its square footage to 1,711.

“It has a fireplace and a walk-in closet, and a very large bathroom,” Mancuso says of the main bedroom. “The home has lots of storage, which is shocking for a period home.

“There is also an attic with a pull-down ladder and electricity,” she continues. “It could be a place that’s further developed.”

Home’s history

As for the property’s provenance, it might have come by mail order. Sears, Roebuck & Co. sold catalog or kit homes from 1908 to 1940, and building supplies for homes prior to 1900.

The homes often have definitive markings on some of the lumber.

“There is a crawl space under the house, and if someone was really daring, they could find information because it’s supposed to be stamped on the wood, but no one has,” Mancuso says with a laugh.

Because of the historical nature of the home, there is a quirk in the kitchen. A low-placed window can’t be moved, so instead there is a built-in bench below it.

“You can’t change the outside of the house, the façade, so it drops below the window,” she says. Other windows in the home are the type that crank out, which might also be original.

Outside, there are gardens and trellis walkways along a flagstone pathway, which goes around three sides of the house.

“The owner has a real green thumb, and there are gobs of potted plants that will all stay with the house,” Mancuso says.

“You can feel the history in this home, and you just want to imagine who lived there and what happened in their lives,” Mancuso says.

She says dozens of people have been through the home in the historic neighborhood of Armory Park and have commented about its good condition and cozy feel.

“It’s the kind of community that people sit out on the front porch and talk to everybody who walks by with their dogs,” she adds.
