A midcentury modern design in the desert is no mirage.

The 3,700-square-foot property was built in 1964 for the Hawkins family and designed by Blaine Drake, a Frank Lloyd Wright apprentice at Taliesin. The home has been owned by only two families. It’s now on the market for $2,495,000.

The four-bedroom, three-bath home in Phoenix last changed hands in 2019 for $1,205,000, according to Realtor.com®.

“It’s a true, unspoiled, midcentury modernist home,” says Scott Jarson, of az architecture. “It hasn’t had any negative changes to it.”

The open floor plan features original mahogany millwork and custom walnut built-ins joined by overhangs and custom steel fascia, which are hallmarks of the midcentury modern design movement. A masonry fireplace in the living room is also original.

“Blaine was a very interesting man,” Jarson says of the architect. “He was one of Wright’s first architectural fellows. They stayed close throughout each other’s lives.”

Drake died in 1993, eight years after he retired from his independent practice.

“He designed over 200 projects,” Jarson says, “and two-thirds of those got built. He made his whole career in the Phoenix area. A few prominent buildings are intact.”

In fact, Drake designed a dental office for Bill Hawkins on West Indian School Road in Phoenix that is still standing.

‘Solid restoration work’

The house is fresh off “solid restoration work,” Jarson says. Thoughtful updates include fresh paint, new appliances, refreshed tile, new HVAC, a new roof, and updated electrical and plumbing. The sellers also reset the original tile in the primary bath.

“They made the house more livable,” Jarson says.

The backyard features a putting green with artificial turf. There is also a carport with space for two cars and a detached bonus room.

Set on a 1-acre lot, the house is all windows in the back, with views of the Camelback Mountain foothills.

“Every room opens to the outdoors, in some manner,” Jarson says. “It’s beautifully integrated with the outdoors. It has a view of some of the most scenic red rock in the valley.”
